Ok....what if our school hours were 7:30-2:15 (for kids)? What impact would this have and on whom? Positive and/or negative. GIve me your feedback.

  1. I believe that parents may be the most affected due to work hours and before and after school care especially for younger students.

  2. I agree with Jeff, but I do feel students need to start later...after an hour ride on the bus, many are getting up at 5 or 6 and that's just too early for them...takes time to wake up and get started....to early for me also! ha!

  3. I think a 7:45 start time may work and it would not be much earlier than our current start time. A lot of our parents go into work at 6 or 7. Many want to drop off kids at 7 or before.

  4. Research shows that middle schoolers do better with a later, not an earlier, start time. I'd be happy to start earlier, but I can't see it benefitting students, who almost unanimously want a later start time.

  5. I agree that the research suggests later starting times as much as 1-2 hours later, especially for adolescents, is beneficial. On the other hand it may cause transportation conflicts with parents who need to be at work @ 8:00. It would also affect students who are involved in extra-curricular activities after school and make tutoring session days long. I believe starting at 7:30, which is only 30 min. earlier would not make a significant academic impact but by starting 30 min. earlier would allow athletes to not miss academic time because they could leave for contests right before the buses leave @ 2:30.

  6. A 2:15 dismissal time would impact family life the most. I feel that a lot of the time students become so busy with homework and extracurricular activities that family time is limited. With an earlier dismissal, students will be able to complete their daily responsibilities earlier so that they have time to spend with their family.

  7. I agree with Melina and Tashanna. A lot of our students are here early already because their parents need to get to work. Instead of them sitting in the foyer of the school, we could start our school day. I also would like the earlier dismissal due to athletes leaving class.

  8. Just speaking from previous experience, 7:15 is hard on children. I worked at a school in Iredell County where kids started at 7:15 and teachers had to be to work by 6:40. I enjoyed leaving early but starting the day was like pulling teeth.
